Do you have questions surrounding Retractable Detectable Markers and the role they could play at your food production site? Find the answers you need below.
2024 saw the launch of Retreeva’s new range of Retractable Detectable Markers. Featuring a Permanent Marker, Dry-Wipe Marker, and Fluorescent Yellow Highlighter, this range answered the industry’s call for Retractable Detectable Pens of a higher quality.
But why do so many sites use Retractable Detectable Markers? What applications are they suited to? And are they compliant with the expectations outlined in Version 9 of the BRCGS Global Food Safety Standard?
In the hopes of answering these questions and more, we have compiled the most common queries surrounding Retractable Detectable Markers, and more specifically, the new Retreeva range.
1.
What are the benefits of using a Retreeva Retractable Detectable Marker?

Retreeva’s Retractable Detectable Markers support three forms of detectability, with the blue housing perfect for visual detection and its food contact approved, shatter-resistant material both x-ray and metal detectable.
The retractable design prevents the nib from drying out, extending the life span of each pen and reducing the frequency of replacements.
As a result, you are afforded all the benefits of a traditional Retractable Detectable pen, but now with the added benefits of Retreeva’s durable, food-safe, and detectable housing.
2.
What considerations have been made for user comfort and experience?
The markers within this range have been ergonomically designed for improved grip. As a result, they are suited to extended use in a wide variety of environments, ranging from hygiene washdowns to chillers and freezers.
The nibs of each pen have also been carefully considered, with the Permanent Marker featuring a pointed nib and the Highlighter featuring a chisel tip for increased accuracy and ease of use.
Finally, all three markers have a strong pocket clip that allows for safe and easy carrying.
3.
What are the available colour options?

In the interest of supporting the colour-coding and segregation needs of the food production industry, Retreeva’s Retractable Detectable Permanent Marker and Retractable Detectable Dry-Wipe Marker are available in: black, blue, green, and red ink.
As for the Retractable Detectable Highlighter, this is available in a fluorescent yellow ink.
It is also worth noting that all the pens within this range have blue housing, as this is the universally accepted colour for visual detection.
4.
Which applications can Retreeva’s Retractable Detectable Pens support?
The Retractable Detectable Permanent Marker can be used to write on a range of surfaces; everything from ingredient containers and dispensers to product packaging and identification tags.
The Retractable Detectable Dry-Wipe Marker is typically used to write on non-porous surfaces and is suited to information that needs to be updated on a regular basis. Think production schedules, task lists, and white boards.
The Retractable Detectable Highlighter is suited to admin tasks such as internal audits and the management of paper checklists.
5.
Are Retreeva Retractable Detectable Markers compliant with BRCGS, Version 9?

Clause 4.9.6.2 of the BRCGS Global Food Safety Standard, Version 9 asks sites to favour the use of stationery items that are “detectable by foreign-body detection equipment” and have been “designed without small external parts”.
With this in mind, Retreeva’s Retractable Detectable Pens have been made from a food contact approved, shatter-resistant housing that is both metal and x-ray detectable.
The design also eliminates the need for a lid, as the retractable design is already sufficient for preventing the nib of the pen from drying out.
